Richard is survived by his wife, Terry-Ann; daughters, Heather and Erica; and granddaughter, Jennifer. He leaves behind his parents, Frank and Eva; sisters, Laura Roome (Lawrence) and Janet Sperling (Felix); brother, John; nephews, Kevin Roome (Apeksha), Edward Sperling, William Sperling, Andrew Sperling and Thomas Sperling; niece, Nola Rustad (Cameron); and uncle Robert Haley (Janet).

Richard graduated BSc Biology and Chemistry in 1978, BSc Electrical Engineering in 1982, and MSc in 1986. He was a Specialist Technician with the Faculty of Engineering from 1985 until 2001, and earned his P.Eng. He joined Wirtanen Electric Ltd. in 2002 as an electrical engineer, and also taught at the Wirtanen Electric Training Foundaiton. He was associated with Anderson & Associates Consulting Engineer as a Forensic Engineer since 2012. He also worked part-time as Santa since 2010.

At University, Richard was an ardent water polo player, SCUBA diver, and Provincial champion Laser sailor. He also held Amateur Radio licence VE6AKF. His interest in Canadian history led him to join the Edmonton House Brigade, which, with Richard’s death, lost its president.

His funeral will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 11737-87 Avenue, Edmonton at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
