Obituary

Mary Caroline Trumpener

In Loving Memory of

Mary Caroline Trumpener

(Maiden: Dorris)
of Edmonton
May 10, 1932 - Oct 24, 2014

Mary died after a long battle with melanoma. She is mourned by her loving husband of 60 years, Ulrich, children Katie, John and Betsy, son-in-law Charlie Scheifley, grandchildren Alexander Maxwell and Daisy Scheifley, brother George Dorris [Jack Anderson] and nieces, Kate Ankeny, Mary Garcia, Suzi Robinson [Pete] Brooke Schloss, McKenna Boling, and Theresa Dorris.

Born in Portland to an Oregon pioneer family, Mary [nee Dorris] grew up on a filbert ranch. She earned her B.A. and membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Honours Society at the University of Oregon, where she also met and married a "handsome" German exchange student. By Ulrich's side, Mary worked as a secretary in Eugene, San Francisco, Berkeley, and at a NATO base in France, before moving to Edmonton in 1966. After raising 3 children, and nursing her elderly mother-in-law, Mary worked tirelessly to help others. As an Amnesty International volunteer for 35 years, Mary fought for the release of political prisoners around the world and helped bring refugee families to safety in Edmonton. She made life long friends teaching English to Chinese immigrants, and was instrumental in saving Strathcona Public Library.

The family is very grateful to the compassionate staff at Edmonton General Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Memorial service: Saturday, November 1 at 4 PM at Mary's beloved St. George's Anglican Church, 11733- 87 Ave, Edmonton.
