of Edmonton
Nov 4, 1959 - Jan 27, 2014

Donald Herbert Marschall of Edmonton, AB, formerly of Inglis, MB, died January 27, 2014 at age 54 years after a valiant battle with lung cancer.

A loving and loyal husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Don is survived by his wife, Margaret "Maggie"; daughter, Abigail "Abbey"; sisters, Ingrid Marschall, Iona Marschall, Ivy (Garth) Betke and Shorey (Rick) Shipalesky; aunts, Linda Zechowski and Elva Marschall; mother-in-law, Donna Cookson Martin; brothers-in-law, James (Sarah), Philip (Ann) and Andrew (Hayley Lopes) Martin; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Martin (Ian March); 11 nieces, one nephew, four great-nephews, three great-nieces, many cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Herb (2002) and Olga (Rutsch) Marschall (2009).

Don, or Donnie as he was affectionately known, was born November 4, 1959 in Russell, MB. As a young boy he climbed into the seat of his family’s Massey tractor and headed straight for the barn. He continued to farm with his father until Herb’s death.

Don loved the outdoors. After moving from the farm to Edmonton, he made the 1,000-kilometre journey home every fall to breathe the fresh country air and renew lifelong friendships. His hobby was hunting. Whether driving across the prairies or through the Rockies, he was on constant lookout for elk and moose. Lakes and rivers fed another favourite pastime, fishing with Abbey.

Gregarious, with a genuine interest in people, Don could make acquaintances just about anywhere, from apartment elevators and hospital waiting rooms to Cuban beaches and 737 airplanes.

We are grateful to family, friends and colleagues for their love and support during Don’s illness. We sincerely thank all those who cared for Don, especially the palliative care staff at the Royal Alexandra and Edmonton General Hospitals.

A Memorial Service for Don will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 12116 – 102 Avenue, Edmonton. A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held in Inglis, MB, July 5, 2014.
