With deep sadness, we announce the death of Walter Jungkind, professor emeritus, who died on August 29 at the University of Alberta hospital.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jennifer (in England), Christine (Nels), Stefan (Debra), Brigit (Aldo) and grandchildren, Alban, Kendra, Oliver, Benjamin and Paolo along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jenny, in 2002 and his siblings: Trudi, Heidi and Oskar.

Walter was born in Zurich, Switzerland on March 9, 1923 where he developed his love for hiking, the mountains and chocolate, as well as his interest in art and design. Moving to London, England in 1950, he continued working in design and started a family. After teaching for many years at the London College of Printing he accepted a job at the University of Alberta and brought his family to Canada in 1968. Here he helped establish the Division of Visual Communication Design, becoming a well-known and highly respected figure in the design world. Even after his retirement in 1990, Walter continued to attend design conferences, mentor former students, and maintain contact with former colleagues. He also loved travelling, cross-country skiing, family dinners and sitting on his balcony in the sun.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, September 24, at 2 p.m., at Foster & McGarvey Funeral Home, 10011 114 Street, Edmonton. Cremation took place on Tuesday, September 3.
