Obituary

Judge Arthur Campbell McMurdo

In Loving Memory of

Judge Arthur Campbell McMurdo

Sunday night the greatest storyteller I know died. My grandpa.

As a former Judge, he taught me how humans, no matter who they are or what they do, need to be respected. As a little girl, I picked up the phone when a man he sentenced called his home. He called to thank my grandpa for the fairness he showed in his case and wanted to tell him that he had changed his life. That was MY grandpa.

My grandpa’s eyes twinkled when he told a story, and he had a million of them. He taught me to play crib, but not to count the cards like he did, because he loved to win. He loved chocolate so much that it had to be hidden from him. My grandpa lived for debating and he relished a good verbal fight. He ate politics for breakfast. As a good Saskatchewan boy from Weyburn, you never met a bigger Tommy Douglas fan. Although cancer ravaged his body and Alzheimer’s ravaged his memories, he never forgot to be a good person.

I hope God is a conservative because my grandpa won’t let a silly thing like death stop a good debate.

You are (and always will be) our sunshine.

He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Muriel; their "one and a half" dozen children: Larry, Kim (Laurel), Sharon, Beth (Martyn), Laura, Glen (Michelle), and Bonnie (Dave); grandchildren: Stacey (Thomas), Trystan, Rebecca, Meghan, Nathan (Daena) Devon, Chelsea, Shaina, Ashley (Julian), Rhyanna, Bretton, Joshua, and Aaron; great-grandchildren: Mabel, and Olive, as well as his last remaining sibling, Peggy, age 95, who lives in Mesa, Arizona.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church, 6919-83 Street, Edmonton.

Donations in memory of Art may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5H 4K1.
