With sadness, we announce that Cora Lillian Molstad passed away peacefully with her family by her side on April 14th at the age of 88 years. She is survived by her children, Dianne, Ed (Bonnie), Rick (Sandy), Lil, Jane (Paul), Sherry (Tim), Colleen (Darryl) and her foster son, Garth Phillips (Rose). She will also be lovingly remembered by her seventeen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Cora was predeceased by her husband, Howard in 2000 as well as her brothers, Paul and Hector. Cora was born in Spirit River, Alberta in 1923 and moved to Edmonton as a young woman where she met and married Howard Molstad. Cora’s life included raising seven children and actively participating as a volunteer in music oriented boards and service. She spent 15 years as the Executive Director of the Kiwanis Music Festival and pioneered many other festivals throughout Alberta and Canada. She was a champion for women, as Cora was the first woman to join the Edmonton Kiwanis Club and the first female president of the Kiwanis Music Festival Board. Cora served a number of terms on Boards with the City of Edmonton including 10 years with the Parks and Recreation Cultural Advisory Board where she developed the Cultural Hall of Fame. She also served as the first president of the Edmonton Valley Zoo Development Society raising funds to build the first natural habitat for Siberian Tigers. She served as a Board member for a wealth of non-profit organizations in areas of the arts/music, health, and sports. She was the recipient of prestigious awards including the Sir Frederick Haultain Award and the Queen’s Jubilee award. Cora was also named Mother of the year in 1968 and was inducted into the Alberta Cultural Hall of Fame. The family thanks the expert and caring staff and Pastor Marcia Kugler at the Grey Nuns Hospital for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta. The family invites relatives and friends to join us at a Memorial Service to celebrate her life on Sunday, April 22 at 1:00 pm at Foster and McGarvey Funeral Home, 10011 - 114 St., Edmonton.
