Paul was called home by his Lord on February 29, 2012 at the age of 74 years.

Paul was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on September 2, 1937 and emigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents and sister (Tineke). In 1961, he married Miriam, his caring and loving wife of 50 years. They have three children: Daphne (Harold), Paul and Corneil (Hannah), and six grandchildren. He is also fondly remembered by family in Canada and Holland, as well as by many friends and former students.

He enrolled in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta, graduating with a B.Sc. (with Distinction) in 1959. National scholarships enabled him to pursue graduate studies at UBC, where he obtained a Masters degree (1961), and a Ph.D. (1964). After graduation, he spent a period at Bell Northern Research in Ottawa, before returning to the University of Alberta where he was a popular professor and enjoyed a 30 year academic career. He foresaw that laser diodes, fiber optics and computer technology would revolutionize telecommunications. He promoted this view through his teaching (for which he won several awards), his research with many graduate students, and his role in the founding of TR Labs. An outgoing person, he was involved with many professional, administrative and student activities, including a stint as Associate Dean of Engineering Co-op. Upon retirement, Paul and Miriam designed their dream home in South Surrey, B.C. Paul enjoyed music, singing in the choir, gardening, being active in his church and several clubs ( U of A Alumni, Probus, CARP), and international travel with Miriam.

A Memorial Service in Edmonton will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church, 11526 - 76 Avenue N.W.
