of Edmonton
Dec 8, 1923 - Jun 13, 2011

Beatrice Anne Rolf (née Grant), born December 8, 1923, died June 13, 2011. Survived by daughter Carol Anne Harper (Daniel), son David (Margaret), son Douglass (Patricia); cherished and much loved grandchildren Mary, Kate, Clare, Aidan, Peter, Matthew and Geoffrey; brother Charlie Grant (Ann); sister-in-law Irma Young (Jack); brother-in-law Norman Rolf (Trish); and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased on May 15, 2011 by her beloved husband of 61 years, Carl Rolf; and, in 2008, by her sister Lois Cummings. Bea was born and raised in Edmonton, the daughter of early Edmonton residents Charles H. Grant, QC and his wife Anne. She graduated from Westglen High School and took a year to complete her Associate Diploma from the Toronto Conservatory of Music before attending the University of Alberta, where she graduated with a BSc (Household Economics) in 1944. She interned as a commercial dietician at Eaton’s in Toronto and then managed the Hudson’s Bay cafeteria in Edmonton until her marriage in 1949. She and Carl were life-long Edmonton residents. An active community volunteer, she was a recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977. She served as president of the University Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, president of the Edmonton Women’s Canadian Club, national director and regional vice-president of the Association of Canadian Clubs and was one of the original members of the Old Strathcona Foundation. An auto-touring enthusiast like her father, she became a director of the Alberta Motor Association in 1981 and was the first woman to serve on the Board of Governors. Happiest helping and being with people or preparing dinners for family and friends she was a gracious lady and her natural gentleness never left her even while she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. A much loved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she will be sorely missed. A Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Anglican, 12116 – 102 Avenue NW, Edmonton, on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Edmonton City Cemetery, 118 Street and 107 Avenue. In lieu of flowers, friends who so wish may make memorial donations directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, T5H 4K1.
