It is with gratitude and thankfulness for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Shirley Marian Kolanchey of Edmonton, at the age of 92. Shirley passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on January 22, 2024. She is predeceased by her beloved husband John; sisters, Elsie, Eleanor; brother Keith; nephews: Bradley, Blair, Craig, and Bryan. Shirley is survived by her nieces and nephews from Saskatchewan, Ontario, B.C., and Washington State; she is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews.

Shirley was born in Edmonton on August 31, 1931, the youngest daughter of Elgie and Julia Latta. Shirley started a long and fulfilling career with the Edmonton Journal in 1948 in its business office. She had a passion for writing, especially human interest stories and history, which resulted in many published articles. John and Shirley were married on July 13, 1973, and throughout their busy life together, made an impact on many people, especially our veterans and their families in the Edmonton area.

An avid swimmer herself, Shirley taught swimming for many years. She also enjoyed walking, hiking, travelling, golfing, and meeting people,  and could be found at her computer, which helped her keep in touch with family and friends. Family was very important to her and she was the hub of connection and information.

Shirley had a consistent Christian faith throughout her life. In her younger days, she taught Sunday School for thirty years and later on was enjoying the fellowship of Beulah Alliance Church. She was an encourager and a loyal and caring friend who showed a spirit of kindness to all.

Shirley will be buried alongside her late husband in the Military section of the Northern Lights Cemetery, Edmonton, Alberta. A Graveside Service will take place on February 10 at 10:30 a.m. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Beulah Alliance Church, Edmonton, Alberta.
