Obituary

John DeWacht

In Loving Memory of

John DeWacht

of Edmonton

John DeWacht passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 89. John was born in August of 1934, in Emmen, Drenthe, Netherlands.

John's early years in the Netherlands set the stage for his long and fulfilled life. His family made the bold move to Canada in 1951 where John continued to embrace new challenges and opportunities.

Throughout his varied career, John was employed as a glass installer, a cab driver, a school bus driver, and an audio/visual technician. He went on to own and operate his own truck, and ended his working career as a truck driver for DHL/Loomis. No matter which job John was at, his favourite part was always interacting with people.

John loved music, both singing and playing his harmonica. His service to others and his community included volunteering with Friendship Ministries, serving as an RCMP Block Watch Captain and as a CRC cadet leader. He was active in his local church and a proud and active member of the Stony Plain Legion.

John is survived by his children, Ann (George) Prins, Joyce (Ward) Elhard, Sylvia (Don) Babiuk, Deb (Darryl) Tetz, and Greg DeWacht. His legacy continues through his 14 grandchildren: Michael Prins, Lisa Prins, Christine Chan, David Elhard, Melissa Elhard, Kyle Babiuk, Cody Babiuk, Lindsay Babiuk, Erin Patzer, Sara Scott, Brad Tetz, Kent Tetz, Colin DeWacht, and Tyler DeWacht. John is survived by 21 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his sisters, Tina Bergman and Rolie Boer; as well as his brother, Joe.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Frieda DeBoer and Jane Mantel.

John suffered from dementia in his final 15 years, yet was always pleasant and thankful for everything that was done for him. He loved a good party and loved to laugh. In his final years, his faith in thought, word and music became his constant focus.

As we bid farewell to John we give thanks that he is safe in the arms of Jesus where he longed to be.

Interment will be at Westlawn Cemetery, 16310 Stony Plain Rd, Edmonton, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024. A Funeral Service to follow at Crosspoint Church, 12235 - 50 Street, Edmonton, at 11:00 a.m with Pastor Micah Emerson officiating.

The family would like extend sincere thanks to the staff at the Village at Westmount for going above and beyond in the care of John while he lived there.
