Obituary

Sidney Michael DeHaan

In Loving Memory of

Sidney Michael DeHaan

of Edmonton

It is with profound sadness that the family of Sid de Haan announce his peaceful passing on Tuesday, May 16th, 2023, at the age of 55 years.

Sid will be lovingly remembered by his wife of twenty years, Vicki; children Ashley (Ben), Jessica (Colton), and Rachel (Jeremy); his grandchildren Isla, Sophie, Max, Finn, and Lucius; siblings John (Brenda), Winni, Alda (Harry), and Martin (Diana); parents-in-law Dean and Kathy; brother-in-law Tim (Sarah); sister-in-law Tanya (Chris); and his numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Sid Sr and Alice.

Sid was a man with an abundant passion for life and his relationships. Everywhere he went he would bump into someone he knew, or make new friends by connecting over a shared experience or a similar interest. His list of hobbies was ever growing: whether it be cycling over mountain ranges with friends, camping in beautiful Canadian sites, spending time in his yard always trying to refine the layout, sampling craft beers, or smoking enormous cuts of meat to share with friends and family. Sid loved planning big events, and would surround himself with people that could see his vision and execute the details. He had a tremendous gift for telling stories, and would have listeners laughing or crying with him. Sid's gift for fostering connection extended to his professional life, with the majority of his career spent in education: as a teacher, technology consultant, assessment consultant, assistant principal, principal, and executive director. Community was so important to him, and he worked hard to ensure that his communities were nurtured. Sid's love for people stemmed from his love for God - he believed that all life is love, and that the simplest acts of care and compassion are a reflection of how we should treat one another. As we support each other and our community at this time, and in the days to come, we honour the values and impact of a man deeply loved and missed.
