In Loving Memory of

Mary Catherine Johnson

(Maiden: Wright)
of Edmonton
Mar 21, 1930 - Jun 27, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Catherine Johnson on June 27, 2019 at the age of 89.

She leaves behind her children, Kimberley (Ted) Smith of Calgary and Jim (Julia) Johnson of Edmonton; grandchildren, Erin (Bill) Kent, Jennifer (Matt) Williams, Matthew Smith, Sam and Emily Johnson; great grandchildren, Mia and Abigail Kent and Max and Fiona Williams; and brother Ron Wright of London, Ontario. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Fred Johnson and brother, Scott Wright.

Mary was born in London, Ontario. She worked with London Life Insurance Company, where she met the love of her life, Fred Johnson. Mary and Fred lived briefly in Montreal before moving to Edmonton, where they raised their family. Mary was an early member of the Junior League of Edmonton and a lifelong member of the Royal Glenora Club.

Mary worked for Family Service Association, in charge of homemaker services, and later as a case worker and supervisor with Alberta Legal Aid Society. Mary highly valued education and lifelong learning. Her family was so proud of her when she attended the University of Alberta in her forties, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction.

Mary was a voracious reader and highly valued the company of her good friends in the book club she belonged to for many years, right up to the time of her passing. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She valued her family above all else, and in recent years often remarked how blessed she felt to be able to spend time with great grandchildren. Mary, in turn, was much loved by her family and friends. She will be sorely missed, but there is some solace in the belief she is once again with Fred.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff on unit 53 and 5 east of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. There will be a celebration of Mary’s life at a later date, to be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice is appreciated.
