Stanley John Skirrow, born May 13, 1926 died December 8, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Helen of 66 years; sons, Gordon and Roger (Cheryl); son-in-law, Ron Weir; grandchildren, Adaya Nyte, Robert Skirrow, Alistair Weir and Trevor Weir; and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Elsie Bowman of Toronto; sister-in law, Lillian Skirrow of Barrhead; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Weir; and brother, Art.

Stan was raised on a pioneer farm in Mosside, near Barrhead. After a short time in the Army and teacher training at the U. of A. he taught in Rycroft, Mundare, Chipman, and Edmonton. In 1952 he married Helen Reitsma of Neerlandia, settled in Edmonton and continued his teaching career only broken by one year as an exchange teacher in Kirkcaldy, Scotland and two years as an External Aid teacher in Kenema, Sierra Leone. After a M.Ed. from the University of Toronto he added administration to his teaching. In his retirement he continued to enjoy travelling and hiking. His volunteer work included ESL with immigrants and leadership in the Waskahegan Trail Association.

A memorial will be held in Foster and McGarvey, 10011 – 114 Street, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, 2018. Stan’s favourite charity after seeing an MSF team at work was Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), #402. 720 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, M5S 2T9.
