Derek Jeffery Arscott

In Loving Memory of

Derek Jeffery Arscott

of Edmonton
Feb 20, 1930 - Apr 25, 2018

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Derek, our husband, father, grandfather, and friend on May 25th. Derek is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edythe; his son Nicholas (Frances Alty-Arscott); grandchildren Jeffrey (Desiree Morin), and Lauren (Matthew Elliott); numerous nieces and nephews including Jeffrey Wharram with whom he was particularly close; and Frances’ brothers and sister, George Alty, Terence Alty, Jane Willey, Morgan Alty and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Owen and Elizabeth as well as two brothers, Gordon and Peter.

Derek was born and grew up in Bexhill On Sea, Sussex, England. This is where he met the love of his life, Edythe, a Canadian girl who was teaching in Bexhill. They married in 1953 and 6 years later made the life changing decision to immigrate to Canada.

Trained as a baker in the UK, Derek went to work for Weston Bakeries in Montreal in 1959. In 1969, he was transferred to Edmonton where eventually, he found his true calling as a baking instructor in the NAIT baking program. Derek had a life-long connection with the Boy Scouts where he made many great friends. Derek and Edythe had a cabin on 68 acres of land in the beautiful County of Smoky Lake where they spent much of their leisure time. But it was spending time with his family that gave him the most joy - particularly his grandchildren who he doted on from the day they were born. His love was returned in spades by Jeff and Lauren with whom he had a very special relationship. He will be sorely missed by all.

Cremation has taken place, and per Derek’s wishes there will be no public service. A small family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Derek’s name to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
