Mar 21, 1928 - Nov 19, 2015

Our dear Mom, Shirley, died on Monday, October 19 after a lengthy cardiac illness. Predeceased by her husband Hugh and five sisters June Golberg, Mary Smith, Fay Dodds, Iris White and Noelle Sim.

Left to mourn her loss are her brother David (Claire) Smith and her children, Doris Kent (John McIvor), Karen (Richard) Douziech, Douglas (Laurie Rampling), Lauralee (Glenn) Swanson; close friend Dorothy Cust; and also her beloved grandchildren Shelagh (Keven) Fitzpatrick, Andrea (Mike) Metcalfe, Ian McIvor (Kirstin McCombe), Sarah (Kenton) Gilchrist, Jeffrey (Ingrid) Douziech, Nicola Kent, Jackie Swanson (Brady Hway), Ross Swanson (Melisa Muņoz), Clay Swanson, and Bonnie Swanson. Shirley is survived by eight great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.

Shirley grew up in Edson and Edmonton graduating as a Registered Nurse from the Royal Alex program in 1950. Her nursing career, which she launched in Wainwright, continued while raising her family. She had a particular focus on the premature nursery until her retirement from the Royal Alex Hospital. Her creative passions of sewing, knitting and baking were always in demand and she donated to many charitable endeavors. Full of energy, she was always game for new adventures including a honeymoon on the newly-opened Alaska Highway, rustic camping trips, world traveling and beekeeping. No matter what she was doing her family and friends always came first; everyone was always welcome. In particular, she reserved a special place in her heart for her grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Dr. Mel Miller Palliative Care unit 9Y at the Edmonton General and her companions for their compassionate care and the staff at Rosedale where she resided for their support. Special thanks are extended to family friend Ed Montpetit, and to her family doctor, Dr. R. Neuls.

A Celebration of Life Tea will be held from 3- 5 p.m., on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Foster and McGarvey Funeral Home, 10011 114 Street, Edmonton.

Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
