Condolences

Greene Norman Bruce

In Loving Memory of

Norman Bruce Greene

of St. Albert

Words cannot express the shock of learning of Norm's passing. While we served together as Sergeants in the Black Watch he was my best friend. I have so many remembrances of the great times we had together. I remember the night when Norm and I sneaked out of our camp in Sennelager, Germany, for a beer or two in a nearby town. At the time it was against orders to leave the camp and we had to hide in a swamp to avoid being caught by the Military Police. When the MPs gave up their search for us Norm emerged from the swamp barely recognizable as his face was covered in mud! Norm and I went off in his Austen-Healy Sprite for a two week tour of Italy in the summer of 1963. On the 15th of February 1965 in Werl, Germany, in an historic ceremony Norm took down the old Canadian flag for the last time and I hoisted the new one. On our return to Canada the two of us were honoured in being selected to go to the Canadian National Exhibition as part of an Army display there. When the Regular Force Black Watch was disbanded Norm went west while I remained in Gagetown and, I very much regret to say, we lost our close contact although we were on the same four month Commissioning From the Ranks course in 1971 and we got together whenever Norm visited Ottawa when we would regale the Officer's Mess singing German Army songs! Our children still think of Norm as their honorary uncle. As his obituary says, he was one of the best. We send our sincere condolences to Laurena and family.
