Obituary

Peter Alexander Fraser (January 22, 1947 November 17, 2014) passed away at the age of 67 after a lengthy illness with cancer. Like the strong man he was, he held off this horrible disease longer than anyone expected.

Peter, as I sit by your side on the last days of your lifes journey, I pray that your courage will give me the strength to continue on and represent you proudly.

Thank you for the enduring love you have for our family: myself, your wife of 43 years, Sheila Elizabeth Fraser; your children: daughter, Cheryl Lynne Assaly, her husband Mathew, and grandchildren, Tyson and Owen; your son, Robert Peter Fraser, his wife, Kathryn, and grandchildren, Mia and Gabriel; and your sister, Valerie Rowe, her husband David, nephew Fraser and niece, Catherine Cassie, will miss you forever.

Your family and close friends who have supported us through this sad journey, will always remember your generosity, love of life and tremendous spirit; even your corny jokes and your unbridled laughter, as you also enjoyed them. Then, there was, of course, how much you loved to win (especially at cribbage and bridge). You gave meaning to the phrase, The right to gloat!. We will all treasure and hold close these times spent together.

We are all so proud of what you stood for and what you accomplished in your life. You graduated from the University of Toronto in the 1970 class of Chemical Engineering. Your career led you to the Dow Chemical Company in Sarnia, Ontario, Lake Jackson, Texas, and then to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. After we both retired, our time was spent between travel, our cabin, and our acreage home.

You spent much of your retirement serving on the Board of the Edmonton Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and helping friends, neighbours and family with building projects from fences to special shelves for the rooms of new grandchildren. We travelled to special places (I believe we best loved our memories of our visit to South Africa). We learned how to sail off the coast of Vancouver Island. And of course, you spent hours perfecting your golf game with your golf buddies. This only touches on your many achievements and the activities you enjoyed.

You are my special friend and love, and life without you will never be the same. Whatever the future holds for me and our family, you will always be with us.

On July 10th, 2013, (our 42nd wedding anniversary) we held a wonderful get-together, so that Peter could enjoy visiting with as many close friends and family as could attend. In good humour, Peter liked to refer to this get-together as his A-Wake!

Our family would like to extend a very special thank you to the following groups and people who helped extend Peters life as long as humanly and medically possible: Dr. Annette Begalke, Dr. Kata Matic, Dr. Curtis Boyington, the doctors and nurses in Radiology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the nurses at the I.V. Clinic at the Grey Nuns Hospital, the doctors and nurses at the Cross Cancer Hospital, and the wonderful Home Care Nurses at the Sherwood Park Health Unit. These people went above and beyond to help Peter. Their compassion, sense of humour and sincere interest in the care and comfort of Peter, will always be remembered by our family. We will never be able to truly express the extent of our gratitude.

To our close friends and family, your kindness throughout Peters illness went beyond the bounds of friendship; your companionship while Peter worked on projects in his workshop at the lake, your notes of love and kind thoughts, your help when we moved from the acreage to our new home, your many visits to our home, your generous invitations to visit your homes, countless dinners and gifts, your phone calls, emails, texts, and especially your time spent with Peter, and sometimes both of us. All of these kindnesses were so appreciated by Peter, and the memories will always be with me.
