May Mary Munro

Obituary

Heaven gained the most incredible angel Thursday. May Mary was the definition of independence and determination. She was a social butterfly who cared so deeply for all those around her. May Mary passed away peacefully in her sleep following a brief stay at the Sturgeon Hospital. An adored mother, wife, mother-in-law and grandmother, many happy memories will live on through her daughter, Joanne (Gordon); daughter-in-law, Debbie; and seven grandchildren, Courtney (Cam), Sarah, Alyssa (Zach), James, Mike, Christine (Nathan) and Joey.

May Mary was predeceased by her family of origin as well as her husband, Al, of 30 years, and son, George (Debbie).

Family was everything to May Mary and she loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, and cooking amazing Sunday roast beef dinners for the family. Welcoming and gracious, she loved to entertain and socialize and could strike up a conversation with anyone. She could be seen walking along the Sturgeon River and elsewhere in St. Albert on a daily basis. She was tenacious and resilient having been widowed 36 years ago and living for the most part independently until her death. She loved children and had many fond memories of being a volunteer with special needs children, and helping out with a kindergarten classroom. Her one big regret in life was not having pursued a career as an elementary school teacher. Bridge, curling and hosting parties were other passions.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, May Mary and Al moved to Calgary right after being married and from there moved to Ottawa, Halifax, London ON, Etobicoke, Vancouver, Kitchener Waterloo and Mississauga. After Al died May Mary moved back to Winnipeg before moving closer to her daughter’s family in St. Albert 22 years ago.

May Mary taught her family and friends that the key to a long healthy life was to stay active and surround yourself with a good community. Her family will miss May Mary fiercely but rest easy knowing she is with all her loved ones who left this world before her, enjoying a rum and coke and probably still refusing to be in pictures.

A Celebration of her Life will be held this summer when friends and family are able to gather.

In Loving Memory of
May Mary Munro
(Maiden: Whyte)
