Obituary

Elizabeth Jane Sturgeon (ne Kennedy), born April 27, 1933, died peacefully and on her own terms on January 13, 2021.

Her children Susan Wright (Jack), Peter (Rebecca Hubbs), Julie (Ken Sande), Mary (Matthew Halstead), sister Gail Kennedy, grandchildren James Wright (Erin), Jeff Wright (Tiffiney), Will and Abby Sturgeon, Evan and Nathan Sande, and great-grandchildren Jake and Jane Wright will miss her dearly. She is predeceased by her sister Patricia and her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Bill.

Jane grew up in London, Ontario and attended University of Western Ontario, where she and Bill met. They married in 1955. She reluctantly agreed to move to Edmonton in 1965 on the condition they stay for just three years. Her plan failed miserably after she and Bill found life in Edmonton to be all they wished for.

Jane was a meticulous homemaker and gracious hostess. She sewed clothes and Halloween costumes, curtains and slipcovers and put dinner on the table every evening. She shuttled her kids to their music lessons and sports, and together with Bill, welcomed many friends into their home for dinner and cocktail parties, and bridge games.

She was community-minded and an ardent supporter of the ballet, opera and symphony. She volunteered with Girl Guides, the Junior League, the Edmonton Art Gallery, and gave her time to several golf tournaments including the Canadian Ladies Open.

Golf was a passion for both Jane and Bill. Together they spent hours on the links at Mayfair where she was Ladies President in 1991 -- and at Monterey in Palm Desert. She and Bill formed many cherished friendships both on the fairways and in the clubhouse.

Jane was a consummate organizer and leader, whether as a Brown Owl guiding her Brownie charges or corralling her husband and kids while filling the dented green Coleman with white bread turkey sandwiches ahead of their annual post-Christmas ski trip to Jasper.

She was loved by many. The family is profoundly grateful to the staff at Touchmark, especially the loving care team in Sapphire who have looked after her every need for more than four years.

Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be organized at a future date. If you wish and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Alberta and NWT.

In Loving Memory of
Elizabeth Jane Sturgeon
(Maiden: Kennedy)
