On Monday, April 8, 2024, Doug Troock of Edmonton passed away at the age of 95. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his family: Doug Troock (Dianne Pearce), Lorna (Jeff) Battershill, Elaine (Bernie) Moore, Ken Troock (Scott Steacy), eleven grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Muriel; daughter-in-law, Wendy Troock; and son-in-law, Gary Stretch.

Doug was born in Edmonton in January of 1929 to William and Alice Troock. For the first nineteen years of his life, Doug lived in Norwood with his three siblings: Oliver, Dennis, and Alice. Doug attended Spruce Avenue School and Victoria Composite High School. While studying accounting at McTavish Business College, he met Muriel Lorna Eckel of Lamont, Alberta. Doug and Muriel were married on December 4, 1948. They lived on 104th Avenue and 128th Street until 1956, when they moved to 90th Avenue and 145th Street. They were together for 68 years until Muriel’s passing on April 17, 2017.

Doug and Muriel enjoyed living and raising their family in the Parkview community. They hosted many family celebrations and parties with their lifelong friends, curled together at the Royal Glenora Club, square danced, and were active members of the Overlander Trailer Club.

Doug was employed for twenty-six years in the family business, “William Troock Furniture Ltd.,” which was renowned for custom-made, high-quality furniture under the banner “Troockbilt.” In 1974, he joined the sales force of the furniture division of Woodward Stores Limited. It was not long before his entrepreneurial spirit came to the fore. In 1978, he started his first business; handling furniture damage claims for major long distance moving companies. Doug also opened and operated a lamp store. His final venture was Doug’s Woodcrafts and Patterns, an internet-based business that had clients throughout North America. Remarkable for a person of his generation, Doug had considerable knowledge of web-based marketing and sales.

Doug was a proud member of the Masonic Saskatchewan Lodge 92 and the Shriners Greeters Unit. His served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta in 2001-2002. In 2022, he was honored for 50 years of dedicated Masonry.

Doug’s life will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Foster and McGarvey Downtown Funeral Home (10011 114 St, NW, Edmonton).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada (DRIFCan) to help support cure-based diabetes research at the University of Alberta.
